Over the river and through the woods, or even across country, now is the time of year for a winter road trip or two. But before you hit the road, make sure your family car is prepared for a safe trip. Here’s what to check and pack:

Check:

  1. Tires should be aired up properly and have adequate tread. Driving in snow? Consider snow tires, or packing chains in your trunk.
  2. Check your heater, defroster, windshield fluid, antifreeze, battery, front and tail lights, and oil levels.
  3. Replace your wiper blades if it has been awhile.
  4. Keep your gas tank fill above the half-way mark on your roadtrip, if it is below freezing
Pack:
  1. Snow driving? Chains, some sand or kitty litter, tire chains, and a small shovel.
  2. Emergency car kit: flashlights, extra batteries, portable cell phone charger (fully charged), jumper cables, first-aid kit, road flares, ice scraper, and a multi-tool knife.
  3. Mittens, hats, and warm socks. Add a blanket for each person.
  4. Non-perishable snacks like nuts, granola bars, raisins, and peanut butter and crackers. And bottled water for every person.

A road emergency can happen to anyone, so its better to be prepared! By keeping these things up-to-date and packed in your car, you’ll be taking a simple extra step to protecting your family this winter on your next road trip to grandma’s house.
